The BEST DIY Non-Toxic Sunscreen Bars and Push Up Sticks
It seems like everything is poison these days, am I right? A quick google will bring up a huge list of toxic ingredients found in most store bought sunscreens. I made a simple list of toxic ingredients to avoid for you to screenshot to keep with you should you choose to buy sunscreen for your family, but even better-below is my simple recipe to make your own Non-Toxic Sunscreen so you know, that you know-what you are using is safe for your family.
ZINC OXIDE-Some people say that Zinc Oxide is toxic but let me explain-Nano Zinc Oxide is toxic because it is small enough to enter the bloodstream, on the contrary NON-Nano Zinc Oxide is perfectly safe as long as you do not inhale it. A broad-spectrum blocker, protecting from UVA, UVB, and even UVC, Zinc Oxide is the perfect go to for making your own sunscreen at home.
CARROT SEED ESSENTIAL OIL- is the highest SPF of the essential oil family with an SPF of 40! I also use Peppermint essential oil (SPF7), and French Lavender essential oil (SPF 6) for a sweet and subtle Lavender Mint scent. The healing benefits of all three of these are too many to list-but it feels so good to know that not only are your protecting from the harmful rays of the sun-but you are doing amazing things for your skin and immune system with the use of each.
BEES WAX-makes the sunscreen water-resistant, is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant.
MANGO BUTTER-with an SPF of 4, mango butter on it's own isn't enough sun protection, but it makes a beautifully nourishing, moisturizing addition, and serves as the creamy base for our lotion bars. It's rich in Vitamins A & C, softens the appearance of fine lines, and scars, soothes insect bites, fights eczema and psoriosis and more.
RAW VIRGIN COCONUT OIL-has an SPF of about 8 and is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, soothing, healing, calming, and moisturizing. CACAO POWDER-is totally optional, but it makes the bright white of the Zinc Oxide a little more subtle and skin toned, and as a bonus the high levels of antioxidants protect and repair the skin from damage and premature aging! It has potent anti-inflammatory benefits, it soothes redness and blemishes, improves your skin's overall appearance. MICA POWDER-is also totally optional, but I think it's so beautiful. The natural mica adds shimmer, reflecting light away from scars, bumbs, divets, and blemishes, it gives the illusion of a smoother appearance. I only had white on hand, but next time I will use a pale gold or coral for an even prettier color.
BEESWAX WRAP: I ordered the cute beeswax reusable wraps on amazon for super cheap
and they keep the bars very well. Because extreme heat can melt both the bars and the wrap, it's best to throw them in your beach cooler if you will be spending more than an hour or so outside. TIPS: These on the go sunscreen bars and push up sticks are so simple to make! I used a silicone mold and they popped right out after just a few minutes in the fridge. For the convenient push up sticks I used the Emerald Oils tubes, of course!
If you can use pots, bowls, and utensils that you keep just for DIY skin care products that makes cleanup way easier, but if not, the best way to clean up is to reheat everything to liquid, and use papertowels to remove most of the residue before washing in very hot soapy water. I would LOVE to hear if you make these! Leave a comment or even tag @emeraldglory_wellness on Instgram <3
